Outreach summary

I have contributed to a variety of outreach projects in multiple media types. I enjoy it and will continue to get involved.

Science Outreach Organisation

  • 2024 Australian Entomological Society AGM and Annual Scientific Conference, organising committee member.

​

  • 2018-2021 Science in the Pub Tasmania, organizing committee member. Organised monthly science communication events featuring three panelists speaking at a local pub.

​

  • 2019, 2020, 2022 Survey leader, Bob Brown Foundation takayna Bioblitz. Led groups of 3-15 in activities recording occurrences of terrestrial invertebrates and uploading to iNaturalist over a weekend.

  • 2025 Melbourne Museum: Nocturnal up late, public talk 'Ants and Grasshoppers: The science behind the Fable.

  • 2025 Melbourne Museum: Science on Show, National Science Week 2025, 'Beetles of the rainforest.'

​

  • 2024    International Congress of Entomology, Kyoto, Japan. Regular 15mins speaker on PhD.

​

  • 2024    Australian Entomological Society annual conference, Hobart. Regular 15mins talk on PhD. 

​

  • 2024    National Science Week Tasmania, 'Vaginal Vignettes with Dr. Tiana Pirtle'. Paid speaker on the sex life of the Neotrogla cave booklouse.

​

  • ​2024    Future Science Talks: Comedy edition. Three week training course followed by an event where scientists presented standup comedy talks about their research.

​

  • ​2019    Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, 'Girls Dig Dinosaurs!' event for International Women's Day. MCd the event and spoke about female Palaeontologist Mary Anning.

​

  • 2018-2020    Woodford Folk Festival, Queensland. volunteering as a 'Roving Butterfly' providing information on local butterflies of the Woodford area, and the re vegetation activities going on at the festival site throughout the year.

  • 2019    That's What I Call Science radio show, guest co-host 'Episode 27: Biosecurity in Tasmania' interviewing Dr Ryan Wilkinson (Director of Biosecurity operations, Biosecurity Tasmania).

Creative and Fun works

  • 2022 National Science Week 'Vaginas' event, 2022. Wrote a romantic book parody called 'Tension and Tenderness' about the reproduction of the Red-backed Water Strider (Gerris gracilicornis) that was read out to over 100 adults. North Hobart, TAS.

  • 2021    The Poetry of Science competition. Created and sung a sea-shanty 'Pippette away me Tessa!' on the topic of insect DNA  extraction. Hobart, TAS.
